If you are an active traveler seeking more than just a leisurely walk, if you crave the burn in your legs and the reward of standing on top of the world, the Mam Xoi Hill & Dinosaur Spine Trek 2 Days is your calling. This is not a standard sightseeing trip; it is a physical and visual odyssey through the rawest, most dramatic terrains of Mu Cang Chai.
Covering a total distance of nearly 30 kilometers over two days, this itinerary combines the thrill of high-altitude ridge walking with the beauty of Vietnam’s most famous agricultural masterpieces.
Day 1 is dedicated to the Dinosaur Spine, a rugged mountain ridge that cuts through the sky. Far from the paved roads and tourist crowds, this trek challenges you with steep ascents and narrow paths. You will walk along the "spine" of the mountain, with valleys dropping away sharply on both sides, offering a 360-degree theater of nature. The wind here tells stories of the ancient land, and the views are nothing short of heroic.
Day 2 shifts the focus to the iconic beauty of Mam Xoi Hill (Raspberry Hill) and the hidden depths of Che Cu Nha. While Mam Xoi is the "face" of Mu Cang Chai, renowned for its perfect round shape, Che Cu Nha is its "soul." This commune holds the highest and steepest rice terraces in the region, recognized as a National Scenic Heritage site. You will trek through dense bamboo forests, cross remote streams, and witness the Hmong people farming on slopes so steep they defy gravity.
This tour is a deep dive into the Black Hmong culture. You will sleep in their traditional wooden houses, eat their food, and walk the paths their ancestors carved centuries ago. It is a journey of endurance, culture, and breathtaking beauty—designed exclusively for the brave and the bold.
Conquer the Dinosaur Spine: Experience the thrill of walking on a narrow mountain ridge with abyssal valleys on both sides. A 15-17 km trek that offers the most panoramic and wild views in the region.
The Icon - Mam Xoi Hill: Stand before the famous "Raspberry Hill," the symbol of Mu Cang Chai’s golden season. Capture the perfect circular terraces that have appeared in magazines worldwide.
Deep Trek into Che Cu Nha: Explore the commune with the steepest rice terraces in Vietnam. Trek through hidden bamboo forests and remote Hmong hamlets that regular tourists never see.
Physical Challenge: With ~30km of trekking over 2 days, this tour is a badge of honor for any hiking enthusiast.
Authentic Hmong Homestay: Spend the night in a traditional wooden house, immersing yourself in the local way of life, cuisine, and hospitality.
Fitness Level: This is a Hard Trek. Participants must have a good level of physical fitness and experience with hiking (15km+ per day).
Gear: Good hiking boots with strong grip are required (the "Dinosaur Spine" can be slippery). Trekking poles are highly recommended.
Weather: In case of heavy rain, the Dinosaur Spine route may be altered for safety reasons.

Trekking Distance: ~ 15 - 17 km
Difficulty Level: Hard / Challenging
Terrain: Mountain ridges, dirt trails, steep slopes.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Morning: The Ascent Starting from the Trekking Mu Cang Chai Office (or your pickup point), we prepare for a day of high adventure. We begin our journey towards the legendary Dinosaur Spine. The trek starts with an ascent that immediately warms up your muscles. As we gain altitude, the noise of the town fades, replaced by the sound of the wind and the rustle of the forest.
Midday: Walking the Spine We reach the ridge—the "spine" of the beast. The path here is narrow and thrilling, offering unobstructed views of the deep valleys on either side. You will feel like you are walking in the clouds.
Lunch: We find a scenic spot on the mountain to enjoy a picnic lunch. Surrounded by wild nature and fresh air, this simple meal becomes a feast for the soul.
Afternoon: Descent to Culture After conquering the ridge, we begin our descent. The landscape shifts from wild scrub and pine to cultivated beauty as we approach the Hmong villages nestled in the valley. We arrive at a traditional Hmong Homestay in the late afternoon. Relieve your tired legs, take a hot shower, and enjoy a hearty dinner prepared by your hosts. The evening is for rest and sharing stories over a cup of local tea (or corn wine!).
Trekking Distance: ~ 12 - 15 km
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Hard
Terrain: Rice terrace banks, bamboo forest, dirt paths.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Morning: The Symbol of Mu Cang Chai After breakfast, we transfer (by motorbike or car) to the base of Mam Xoi Hill. We arrive early to witness the "Raspberry Hill" in the best light. This is the moment to take out your camera—the concentric circles of golden rice are a masterpiece of human ingenuity. From Mam Xoi, we leave the crowds behind and begin our trek into the heart of Che Cu Nha Commune.
Midday: Into the Wild Green The trek takes us deeper into the mountains. We navigate through lush, towering bamboo forests—a scene reminiscent of martial arts movies. The trail opens up to reveal the magnificent terraced fields of Che Cu Nha, known for being the steepest and most dramatic in the district.
Lunch: We stop for a picnic lunch by a stream or a shaded spot in the fields, soaking in the tranquility of the remote highlands.
Afternoon: The Final Stretch We continue trekking through the hidden trails of Che Cu Nha, passing isolated Hmong houses and observing the locals tending to their buffaloes and crops. The path winds down towards the valley bottom. Upon reaching the pickup point, our driver will be waiting to transfer you back to the Trekking Mu Cang Chai Office. We high-five to celebrate conquering 30km of Mu Cang Chai’s toughest trails!
