The road and bridges from Kampot to Route 4 were only finished in the last 12 months. Extra day/s can be included where possible on request. Maybe an extra day in Sihanouk Ville or an overnight detour to the Thai border town of Koh Kong.
You will be picked up from your hotel around 8 am and started a motorbike trip to our depot, known to all as the Hog House, approximately 12kms from the center of the city in the village of Takmau. Here we will have a basic breakfast, finalize the paperwork, go over our bikes and answer any queries. In departing from our depot you will avoid most of the craziness that is Phnom Penh traffic. We leave Takmao around 10 am and take a motorbike through the countryside to Takeo. Here we stop for a short drink break in the center of Takeo town. From Takeo, we continue onto Kampot.
Suggestions: Here we book into our hotel. You have a choice of two hotels, the historical Bokor Mountain Lodge with (6)rooms upstairs and bar/restaurant downstairs, or the more modern Rikitikitavi with (4)rooms downstairs and bar-restaurant upstairs.
Both are small so we may end up occupying both. Don’t worry about location as they are both on the riverside and approximately 25 meters apart. You will have a few hours to relax or explore the area, perhaps even a short 16km trip to the beach at Kep for a dip in the ocean. That night we’ll have dinner at a Khmer restaurant on the river for dinner and a few drinks. After dinner perhaps a few drinks at a few of the bars in Kampot such as the Rusty Keyhole (a personal favorite of mine) then off to bed.
We depart Kampot around 10 am after breakfast at the Rusty Keyhole bar and restaurant. We ride relatively quiet roads until we reach Route 4. Route 4 is the shortest route from Phnom Penh to Sihanouk Ville and warned, it can get quite hectic. Just before Sihanouk Ville, we will stop off at the Kabal Chhay waterfalls. The waterfalls are about 10 km off the road along a dirt track.
In the wet season, we may organize our escort vehicle to bring us back later as the road may be quite muddy. We then ride our motorcycles into Sihanouk Ville where we check into the Reef Resort. From here you are free to relax by the pool or walk to the nearby beaches. That night we will head to Treasure Island, a Khmer seafood restaurant on a deserted beach. Then the rest of the night is yours to enjoy the nightlife that is Sihanouk Ville.
Day 3 is a lazy day indeed. You may like to just relax on the beach. It’s unnecessary to leave the Reef Resort, perhaps for a day by the pool. If you’re a bit more energetic, your guide will be more than happy to show you around Sihanouk Ville or even organize an excursion to Strung Hav, a small fishing village 30 km from the town.
Strung Hav is famous among local ex-pats for its simple but tasty seafood restaurant. Once again the road is dirt and in the wet season it’s not the place to take a motorbike, still, your guide can organize another way to get there if you desire. Be it a trail bike or in our escort vehicle. You’re also free to explore the area and its fine beaches.
We leave Sihanouk Ville but never fear, we don’t say goodbye to Cambodia’s beaches just yet. We depart the Reef Resort after breakfast and take a ride back to Kampot. After a drinks break in Kampot, we will ride a motorbike for the short distance to Krung Kep.
In Kampot we decide whether to have lunch at Kristian’s Rusty Keyhole (where the BBQ ribs are famous throughout the Kingdom) or, after a drink, we take a ride to Kep for seafood (where the seafood is famous throughout the Kingdom) Kep was once the darling of elite Cambodians before Sihanouk Ville became Cambodia’s number one beach destination.
In Kep, we check into the Beach House, a splendid hotel set in the hills overlooking the ocean. Here you can enjoy the pool or walk down to the beach. That night we will have dinner at a Khmer seafood restaurant. There are getting to be more drinking establishments in Kep, but maybe a swim or quiet beer back at the Beach House is the best way to finish our last night before Phnom Penh.
We are in no hurry to take a motorcycle around the 150 odd kilometers back to the Hog House. Maybe an early breakfast followed by an hour or two on the beach. We’ll check out around noon, and then have lunch at another Khmer seafood restaurant. After lunch, we begin the final leg of our tour. We’ll return to the Hog House in Takmau well before dark with a few drinks, a swim, and a BBQ before you are dropped off at your hotel that evening in Phnom Penh.
