Your Cambodian adventure begins in Phnom Penh, a city that beautifully balances its vibrant present with its significant past. Over the initial days, you'll delve deep into the country's recent history, gaining crucial insights at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) and the solemn Choeung Ek Killing Fields. These powerful and respectful visits provide a vital understanding of the Khmer Rouge era, shaping a more complete perspective of Cambodia. Beyond its modern history, Phnom Penh also showcases its enduring royal heritage. You'll explore the magnificent Royal Palace, a stunning example of Khmer architecture, and the adjacent Silver Pagoda, renowned for its floor of 5,000 gleaming silver tiles and its collection of precious Buddha statues, including the revered Emerald Buddha. A visit to the National Museum further enriches your understanding of Cambodian art and archaeology, setting the stage for the country's rich cultural tapestry. To cap off your exploration of the capital, a serene Mekong River cruise offers a different perspective, showcasing the bustling riverfront and the tranquil life along its banks as the sun sets.
The latter half of your tour transitions to the sun-drenched shores of Sihanoukville, Cambodia's premier coastal city. Here, the focus shifts to pure relaxation and enjoyment of the tropical paradise. You'll have ample time to unwind on some of Cambodia's most beautiful beaches, such as the laid-back Otres Beach, known for its calm waters and bohemian vibe, or the more developed Serendipity Beach, offering vibrant nightlife and numerous dining options. The pristine sands of Sokha Beach provide an exclusive escape for those seeking tranquility. A highlight of your coastal experience will be an exciting island hopping tour to nearby paradises like Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem. These islands boast breathtakingly clear turquoise waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and discovering vibrant marine life. You might even have the opportunity for diving in some of the region's best spots. Whether you prefer lounging in a hammock, strolling along the shoreline, or indulging in fresh seafood, Sihanoukville offers the ideal setting to rejuvenate. As each day draws to a close, prepare to witness spectacular sunset views over the Gulf of Thailand, painting the sky with an array of colors – the perfect end to a perfect day. You will be picked up from your hotel around 8 am and started a motorbike trip to our depot, known to all as the Hog House, approximately 12kms from the center of the city in the village of Takmau. Here we will have a basic breakfast, finalize the paperwork, go over our bikes and answer any queries. In departing from our depot you will avoid most of the craziness that is Phnom Penh traffic. We leave Takmao around 10 am and take a motorbike through the countryside to Takeo. Here we stop for a short drink break in the center of Takeo town. From Takeo, we continue onto Kampot.
Suggestions: Here we book into our hotel. You have a choice of two hotels, the historical Bokor Mountain Lodge with (6)rooms upstairs and bar/restaurant downstairs, or the more modern Rikitikitavi with (4)rooms downstairs and bar-restaurant upstairs.
Both are small so we may end up occupying both. Don’t worry about location as they are both on the riverside and approximately 25 meters apart. You will have a few hours to relax or explore the area, perhaps even a short 16km trip to the beach at Kep for a dip in the ocean. That night we’ll have dinner at a Khmer restaurant on the river for dinner and a few drinks. After dinner perhaps a few drinks at a few of the bars in Kampot such as the Rusty Keyhole (a personal favorite of mine) then off to bed.
We depart Kampot around 10 am after breakfast at the Rusty Keyhole bar and restaurant. We ride relatively quiet roads until we reach Route 4. Route 4 is the shortest route from Phnom Penh to Sihanouk Ville and warned, it can get quite hectic. Just before Sihanouk Ville, we will stop off at the Kabal Chhay waterfalls. The waterfalls are about 10 km off the road along a dirt track.
In the wet season, we may organize our escort vehicle to bring us back later as the road may be quite muddy. We then ride our motorcycles into Sihanouk Ville where we check into the Reef Resort. From here you are free to relax by the pool or walk to the nearby beaches. That night we will head to Treasure Island, a Khmer seafood restaurant on a deserted beach. Then the rest of the night is yours to enjoy the nightlife that is Sihanouk Ville.
Day 3 is a lazy day indeed. You may like to just relax on the beach. It’s unnecessary to leave the Reef Resort, perhaps for a day by the pool. If you’re a bit more energetic, your guide will be more than happy to show you around Sihanouk Ville or even organize an excursion to Strung Hav, a small fishing village 30 km from the town.
Strung Hav is famous among local ex-pats for its simple but tasty seafood restaurant. Once again the road is dirt and in the wet season it’s not the place to take a motorbike, still, your guide can organize another way to get there if you desire. Be it a trail bike or in our escort vehicle. You’re also free to explore the area and its fine beaches.
We leave Sihanouk Ville but never fear, we don’t say goodbye to Cambodia’s beaches just yet. We depart the Reef Resort after breakfast and take a ride back to Kampot. After a drinks break in Kampot, we will ride a motorbike for the short distance to Krung Kep.
In Kampot we decide whether to have lunch at Kristian’s Rusty Keyhole (where the BBQ ribs are famous throughout the Kingdom) or, after a drink, we take a ride to Kep for seafood (where the seafood is famous throughout the Kingdom) Kep was once the darling of elite Cambodians before Sihanouk Ville became Cambodia’s number one beach destination.
In Kep, we check into the Beach House, a splendid hotel set in the hills overlooking the ocean. Here you can enjoy the pool or walk down to the beach. That night we will have dinner at a Khmer seafood restaurant. There are getting to be more drinking establishments in Kep, but maybe a swim or quiet beer back at the Beach House is the best way to finish our last night before Phnom Penh.
We are in no hurry to take a motorcycle around the 150 odd kilometers back to the Hog House. Maybe an early breakfast followed by an hour or two on the beach. We’ll check out around noon, and then have lunch at another Khmer seafood restaurant. After lunch, we begin the final leg of our tour. We’ll return to the Hog House in Takmau well before dark with a few drinks, a swim, and a BBQ before you are dropped off at your hotel that evening in Phnom Penh.
