Overview

Overview
With the noteworthy exception of the region surrounding Dong Van and Meo Vac, the provinces of northeastern Vietnam, which arcs eastward from Ha Giang to Lang Son, are not as magnificent as those found west of the Red River Valley. Here, the peaks are generally lower, the views are more intimate and have a gentler character overall, and there are less minority people dressed traditionally. Although it's still not as easy to see everything as it is in the northwest, the recently upgraded route between Meo Vac and Cao Bang makes it possible to visit the breathtaking scenery of Ha Giang Province, Ba Be Lake, and the area surrounding Cao Bang without having to go back.

The agricultural landscapes of the northeast are its main attractions; they range from classic images of towns completely covered in forest to spectacular limestone terrain, where pockets of farming are wedged between rocky outcrops whose lower slopes are ridged with terraces. Nonetheless, there are still large tracts of undeveloped wilderness and open space where ethnic minorities live and engage in swidden farming due to low population density. Although many have embraced Vietnamese culture, minorities in more isolated areas nevertheless maintain their unique cultural identity. This is especially clear at local markets, which are held on times determined by the lunar calendar.
