Chikan Ancient Town, Kaiping Diaolou and Villages. Drive to Shunde
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: In Shunde
In the morning, pick up from the downtown of Guangzhou city and drive for about 2 hours to Kaiping. At first, we will visit Chikan Ancient Town, with a history of 350 years. It was once one of the most prosperous towns in western Guangdong, with a reputation as a famous town in Lingnan, a century-old commercial port and hometown of overseas Chinese. A large number of commercial arcades built in the 20th century stretch for several miles. The vicissitudes of life and cobblestone streets, mottled and empty window grilles, and elegantly carved gray sculptures form the unique style of the ancient town.
Kaiping Diaolou and Villages feature the Diaolou, multi-storeyed defensive village houses in Kaiping, which display a complex and flamboyant fusion of Chinese and Western structural and decorative forms. There are 4 Diaolou groups in Kaiping. There are 9 Diaolou and 6 Lu (Western-style villas) in Zili Village. The earliest Longshenglou was built in the eighth year of the Republic of China (1919), and the latest Zhanlu was built in the thirty-seventh year of the Republic of China (1948). Among them, the most exquisite is the 6-story Mingshilou.
Backed by the majestic Baizu Mountain, Maxianglong Village faces the clear Tanjiang River. It was built by the Huang and Guan families in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. There are more than 100 traditional dwellings, Diaolou and cottage-style villas in the village, scattered among ancient forests and bamboos. During a stroll, there are verdant bamboos, shaded trees, birds and flowers, and the scenery is charming, just like a fairyland on earth.
In the late afternoon, we will drive for about 2 hours to Shunde, Foshan for overnight.
