Day 1: Siem Reap to Kampong Thom, Cycle Sambor Prei Kuk 55km

Starting with an early pickup from your hotel, we have a two-and-a-half-hour drive to reach Kampong Thom. This is the neighboring province to Siem Reap. After a bike fitting, we set off on a ride north of the town to find the sprawling complex of pre-Angkorian temples known as Sambor Prei Kuk. These ruins date back as far as the 7th century and are remarkably intact for their age. The leafy surroundings and absence of tourists make this a really special experience. After we see out the heat of the day in the shade, we return to Kampong Thom by a different route and enjoy a tasty, authentic meal.

Day 2: Transfer & Cycle to Phnom Penh at 45km

Again a drive is necessary to set us up for a great ride. We have a lazy morning due to timings and after a drive of about three hours, we find ourselves at Oudong Mountain. Surprisingly, for a short period the capital of Cambodia. Today it is a hilltop temple with views over the surrounding flatlands. We enjoy a Cambodian-style picnic here and then take an afternoon ride on lovely village roads and trails, mostly unpaved. We zig-zag our way through farmland where rice is the main product and we pass Oudong’s smaller brother, Basset Mountain. As the ride bears on, we cross the train tracks of the recently refurbished, but as yet un-operational railway line. From here the scenery changes rapidly and for those comfortable riding in traffic, you can ride right up to the hotel door. For those that are not game, the support vehicle awaits. Dinner tonight marks the end of the first third of our epic journey and will be had by the Tonle Sap River, not far from where the three main rivers of Cambodia converge, which was the main reason for Phnom Penh’s placement

Day 3: Rest Day in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh has had a turbulent history. When the French colonialists arrived, it was little more than a collection of wooden shacks by the river, but they soon changed that and in doing so created what was once considered a very beautiful city. When the Khmer Rouge evacuated the city in 1975, they started it on its way to decay and decline, a theme that had carried through until only fairly recently when the country's economic development accelerated rapidly. Your guide can dispense a great deal of advice on how the city can be explored and will offer a late afternoon walk to introduce you to some of the lesser-known aspects of this eccentric city.

Day 4: Cycle the Islands of the Mekong 30km, Speed Boat to Chau Doc

This morning we take to bikes again and explore the nearby Mekong islands where we pass through charming village communities, fruit orchards, traditional silk weaving workshops, and a variety of temples from a more recent time. This is a highlight ride and gives a unique perspective on Phnom Penh and its surroundings. After lunch, we board the international boat down the Mekong River into Vietnam and to Chau Doc, a bustling Delta town with a specialization in fish sauce.

Summary

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Cycling distance: 30km

Day 5: Chau Doc Cycle to Long Xuyen 75km

The Delta adventure starts in earnest today. The first of many short ferry rides comes after about 15km and the rest of the day will involve crossing numerous canals by bridge and boat and following a path through the maze of waterways that is the Delta. You will likely be struck today by the fertility of the land as every square inch is cultivated for food production and each human insight works hard to grow, harvest, process, or transport these products. The riding is predominantly on small, paved canal paths with only motor scooters as other traffic. We roll into the substantial town of Long Xuyen in the late afternoon.

Summary

Day 6: Long Xuyen Cycle & Boat to Can Tho 70km

Our final ride of the trip today has a fitting route. The canal paths continue this morning and become even more interesting as we go. The countryside is just as scenic as yesterday, but with an even higher concentration of canals, the farm produce now includes large fruit such as jackfruit hanging from trees by the paths. We encounter mat weaving and wooden boat building today as well as yet another amazing lunch. We finish up with a boat ride and arrive in the pleasant, bustling town of Can Tho in the late afternoon.

Day 7: Floating Markets, Transfer to Saigon

An early morning visit to the floating markets is on offer today. It’s an impressive sight with a collection of boats of varying sizes and their crews tossing all manner of fruit and vegetables from boat to boat as the families of the Delta trade. Some produce remains in the Delta but the bulk will go to feed the densely populated city of Saigon. After breakfast, we pack up and board the van for a three-hour drive into Saigon where the tour concludes. This is an exciting city and worth a couple of extra days of your time if you can spare them.

Day 20: Thai Hoa – Cam Thuy

Early morning starts to beat the heat of the day. The route takes us away from the river and appears to contour through the same range of mountains that stretch from Thai Hoa to Cam Thuy on Ho Chi Minh trails. The road gets more beautiful the closer you ride to Ngoc Lac with looming karst limestone cliffs and lush vegetation. The route is tarmac all the way but quite hard riding due to the undulating terrain. We ride for the first time on the newly built two-lane Ho Chi Minh Highway. It hardly warrants two lanes as there is no traffic! The road makes for smooth fast riding, and for those who prefer there is always the old highway dirt and gravel – that weaves around the new highway allowing for plenty of exploring possibilities along the way. Ride to Muc Son, on the banks of River Song Chu. On the outskirts of this small town are the famous Kan Linh historical relics – a pagoda where the first king of the Ly dynasty, Le Thai To, ruled, in 1428. Continue riding on the trail to Yen Cat. The distance covered today is quite long and there will be the chance to transfer some sections by the backup vehicle to rest weary legs. There are fewer villages today as the route cuts through forests and jungle lunch en route. Overnight in Cam Thuy hotel.
