Overview

From Ancient Khmer Origins to Vibrant Floating Villages – A Full-Day Journey into Cambodia's Diverse Heritage

Embark on an enriching and deeply contrasting full-day small group tour that seamlessly blends the ancient origins of the Khmer Empire with the vibrant, living heart of Cambodia's aquatic life. Golden Trail Travel invites you on an unforgettable journey from the foundational temples of the Roluos Group to the fascinating floating village of Kampong Phluk on Tonle Sap Lake. This meticulously crafted tour offers a comprehensive and deeply authentic glimpse into two distinct yet equally captivating facets of Cambodian heritage – showcasing both the architectural beginnings that led to Angkor's grandeur and the ingenious resilience of communities thriving on water. It's perfect for history enthusiasts, cultural explorers, and nature lovers seeking a profound and diverse understanding of Cambodia.

Your immersive adventure begins with a comfortable pick-up directly from your Siem Reap accommodation by your professional, English-speaking guide and a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. As you journey southeast from the city, your guide will provide fascinating context about Cambodia's early history, the significance of the pre-Angkorian era, and the vital role of Tonle Sap Lake, setting the stage for a day of diverse and impactful discoveries.

The morning portion of your tour is dedicated to the Roluos Group, a collection of monuments that represents the earliest permanent structures built by the Khmer. Dating back to the 9th century, these temples were part of Hariharalaya, the first major capital of the Khmer Empire before Angkor Thom. Exploring these sites offers crucial insights into the evolution of Khmer architecture and art. You'll typically visit:

  • Lolei: Located on an island in the center of a now-dry baray (water reservoir), Lolei comprises four brick towers and is renowned for its excellent sandstone carvings on false doors and lintels, showcasing early Khmer artistry.

  • Preah Ko: This was the first temple built at Hariharalaya, consisting of six brick towers arranged on a sandstone base. Its unique, delicate stucco work over brick and meticulously carved lintels depicting Hindu deities are particularly noteworthy.

  • Bakong: As the largest and most impressive of the Roluos temples, Bakong is an early example of a temple mountain, featuring a stepped pyramid design that would become a hallmark of later Angkorian architecture. You can ascend its tiers to appreciate its scale and design, and observe its later additions, including a contemporary Buddhist monastery nearby.

Your guide will bring these ancient structures to life, explaining their historical significance, religious symbolism, and how they laid the groundwork for the more famous temples of Angkor. The relatively peaceful setting of Roluos, nestled amidst rural landscapes, offers a contemplative atmosphere.

After immersing yourself in the ancient past, a delicious and authentic local Cambodian lunch will be provided at a carefully selected restaurant, allowing you to refuel and savor regional flavors amidst the beautiful countryside.

The afternoon transitions to a completely different yet equally captivating experience: the vibrant aquatic world of Tonle Sap Lake and the unique village of Kampong Phluk. As you approach the lake's edge, you'll board a traditional local boat for an unforgettable journey into one of Southeast Asia's most remarkable ecosystems.

Kampong Phluk is renowned for its ingenious adaptation to the lake's dramatic seasonal fluctuations. Depending on the water levels, you'll witness towering stilt houses that soar above the water during the wet season, or genuine floating homes that rise and fall with the lake. Your boat will gently glide through the intricate network of waterways, allowing you to observe the daily life of the residents – children paddling to school, fishermen tending their nets, and villagers going about their unique water-based routines. Your guide will provide insightful commentary, explaining the unique challenges and resourceful adaptations of life on the lake, the local economy, and the cultural traditions of these resilient communities.

A significant highlight of this part of the tour, particularly during the wet season (typically June to February), is the opportunity to explore a serene flooded mangrove forest. You'll transfer to a smaller, more intimate rowing boat (or sometimes by kayak), allowing you to gently navigate through the narrow channels of this submerged forest. The sight of trees standing silently in the water creates an ethereal and incredibly peaceful landscape, offering unparalleled opportunities for stunning photographs and a moment of quiet reflection amidst nature's beauty.

Beyond the village and forest, your boat will venture further out onto the vast expanse of Tonle Sap Lake itself, offering breathtaking panoramic views and a sense of its immense scale. You'll experience the tranquil beauty of the open water and gain a true appreciation for this vital freshwater resource, a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Throughout the day, your knowledgeable guide will offer insightful commentary, answer your questions, and ensure a flexible itinerary that caters to the small group's interests and pace. This intimate setting allows for a more personalized experience, fostering camaraderie among participants and ensuring everyone has ample opportunity for observation, learning, and photography.

This Roluos and Kampong Phluk Tour is perfect for history buffs, cultural enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a comprehensive, unhurried, and deeply immersive experience of Cambodia's diverse heritage, connecting its ancient roots with its vibrant present. Return to your accommodation in Siem Reap in the late afternoon, filled with spectacular memories, breathtaking photos, and a profound appreciation for the artistic genius, enduring resilience, and unique charm of the Cambodian people. Golden Trail Travel ensures seamless logistics, comfortable transportation, and an insightful journey into the heart of this remarkable region.

Day: Roluos and Kompong Phluk tour 1Day
We will take you at your hotel and drive about 15 km southeast of Siem Reap to reach the temples of the Roluos group, a collection of monuments representing the remains of Hariharalaya, the first major capital of the Angkorian-era Khmer Empire. The Angkor period was inaugurating in 802 with the establishment of the first capital on Phnom Kulen by king Jayavarman II. Nearly 50 years after, he moved the capital to Hariharalaya, probably for defensive reasons. Four successive kings reigned at this site for over 70 years before Yasovarman built Phnom Bakheng and moved the capital to the Angkor area in 905. We will visit the three main temples of this site, Prasat Bakong, the oldest temple mountain of the Angkor-era, Prasat Preah Ko, with beautiful preserved carvings and Prasat Lolei, 4 tours built in the middle of a now dry baray.
Then we will go to the fishermen’s village of Kompong Phluk, Cambodia great lake, enjoy tonlesap day tour. During the dry season (February to August), the village can be reach by car or motorbike, as the – bumpy - road that is normally flooded dries up. During the rainy season, a short boat ride from the Roluos village, through the wetland area will take you to Kompong Phluk. Kompong Phluk is not a floating village but a village on stilts and in spite of fishing is often the privilege of the Vietnamese minority, the inhabitants of Kompong Phluk are almost exclusively of Khmer origin. The villagers frequently move from house to another house. During the rainy season, they live in the house on stilts and move to small huts near the waterfront during the dry season.
As we will arrive at the village at about Noon, we will enjoy a nice lunch from fresh local fish, shrimps and vegetables prepared by the local women. Then, we will visit the village, the pagoda on the only butte (the only building which is not on stilts) and see the activities of the villagers before doing a traditional boat cruise. Small canoes, paddle by villagers, will take you deep into the dense flooded forest. The trees of this forest are perfectly adapted to their unusual existence as they are completely submerged a part of the year.
In the afternoon, a boat will take us on the big Tonle Sap lake, passing through the floating village of Chong Khneas to reach the boat dock, south of Siem Reap. We will still climb the Phnom Krom hill to visit the three old towers dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma respectively and enjoy the sunset view of the Tonle Sap. Then we will drive you back to your hotel. End excursion tour to tonle sap lake.
