Northwest Vietnam Terraced Trail: 9-Day Adventure from Mu Cang Chai to Sapa & Lan Ha Bay

9:00 AM: Our cultural journey begins at the Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), Vietnam's first national university (11th century). Wander through its peaceful gardens, admire the city's symbol, Khue Van Cac, and view the World Heritage stone steles honoring past scholars.

Next, we visit the Museum of Ethnology (closed Mondays). Spend two hours gaining a deep insight into Vietnamese culture through the traditional costumes, tools, and houses of Vietnam’s many ethnic groups.

In the afternoon, we transition to the French Quarter—Hanoi’s "Little Paris," with its tree-lined boulevards and grand architecture. We visit (outside) Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, then take a leisurely walk through the botanical gardens to see the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh’s simple house on stilts, and the unique One-Pillar Pagoda.

The day concludes with a mesmerizing Water Puppet Show, a unique art form that first appeared in the 11th century. Watch as puppets dance on the water, narrating the daily life and folklore of the Vietnamese people.

8:00 AM: Meet your guide and driver and begin the scenic drive toward the Northwest frontier and the fertile valley of Muong Lo. The journey takes you along the magnificent Da River, an important waterway of the region.

We stop in Thanh Son to visit a serene green tea plantation hill, where you can walk and appreciate the simple beauty of the land. We then walk through villages belonging to the Muong ethnic group, considered one of the most culturally intact communities in the North. This is a rare chance for genuine cultural immersion, as the Muong have been historically less influenced by outside cultures.

We arrive in Nghia Lo and stretch our legs with a walk or bike ride through the Thai village. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful rice field valleys and traditional houses on wooden stilts, meeting the famously friendly locals who still preserve their authentic way of life.

After a local breakfast, we visit the bustling Nghia Lo market before heading to the legendary Mu Cang Chai via Tu Le. This drive is considered one of the most beautiful in Asia.

We ascend toward the breathtaking terraces. This region—especially Che Cu Nha, De Su Phinh, and La Pan Tan—was recognized as a national masterpiece in 2007. We cross the hilly region populated by the Dao ethnic group, stopping to meet locals and capture spectacular photos.

We drive up the famous Khau Pha Pass, which offers a truly splendid panoramic view of the valleys below. The car takes us along the legendary route to Mam Xoi (Sticky Rice Hill), where you will admire the gorgeous rice terrace masterpieces created by Hmong peasant artists across generations. This trekking segment is a physical conquest rewarded by the most incredible views on Earth.

After breakfast, we drive towards Than Uyen, another major rice valley of the Thai people. The stunning terraces continue to follow us.

Before reaching Sapa, we make a vital stop at Na Tam Village in Lai Chau, home to the distinctive Laotian and Lu people. Here, you'll witness unique traditions—Lu women are often distinguished by their black teeth and vibrant, indigo clothing adorned with silver. Take a leisurely walk to explore the village and meet these friendly locals for an intimate cultural exchange.

We then cross the legendary Hoang Lien Son Pass (O Quy Ho Pass), the longest and highest mountain pass in Vietnam (54km, 2047m). Stop at the top to soak up the grandiose landscape and take photos that feel literally on top of the world. We arrive in Sapa town, the famed French-discovered mountain retreat, in the afternoon.

8:00 AM: We start our full-day trek by transferring to Y Linh Ho village. We follow a path downhill, encountering the friendly H’mong ladies and children who inhabit the houses nestled in the valley.

For the adventurous and sportive, we take the uphill trek along scenic buffalo paths offering breathtaking views and fewer tourists. If you prefer a more leisurely path, we stroll along the Muong Hoa River.

We arrive at Lao Chai village and follow a winding path through the rice fields to a charming hamlet. Here, you’ll have the unique chance to meet a Hmong grandmother—the last craftsman in her community who uses the traditional beeswax technique to decorate the community's indigo clothing. This is a rare moment of authentic immersion into their daily life.

We continue to Ta Van village, the lovely home of the Dzay people, situated perfectly with amazing views of the river and terraces. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before we transfer to Bac Ha via an extremely scenic route, enjoying views of mountains and hydropower lakes. Bac Ha is famous for its colorful minority groups, including the Hmong, Phu La, and Tay.

Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere, admiring the colourful, intricate attire of the local ethnic groups, including the Flower Hmong. After the market, we take a relaxing walk through the idyllic ethnic villages, passing plum gardens, cornfields, and traditional clay houses, providing beautiful final views of the Northwest landscape.

We return to town for lunch before the scenic transfer back to Hanoi, checking into your hotel around 6:00 PM, ready for the next chapter of your journey.
