Day 1: DON KHONG – VOENKHAM, CAMBODIA
Meet up with your Cambodian hosts for the ride on south to Stung Treng. This newly redeveloped road passes through uninterrupted forest for around 60km before reaching the Se San River where a brand new bridge is under construction to the provincial capital that sits on the other bank at the confluence of the Se San and Mekong Rivers. This is a dusty, provincial town with only one reasonable hotel that is clean and competent. Check in here and get advice on the best restaurant in town for dinner from the staff.Meals: DApprox Cycling Distance: 65 KM Day 2 : STOEUNG TRENG – KRATIEAfter breakfast, check out and set off by bike following the Se San River west until it meets the Mekong, then cycling south along the east bank. The support vehicle will take the main road south. The road starts out as rough tarmac, crossing many small bridges and passing through rural villages, before turning to sand. Eventually the trail disintegrates into cow tracks and disappears in several directions into forest… you can go no further. So we get back on the newly built National Road straight to Kratie. This is a charming town with a fair amount of surviving French colonial architecture and some decent cafes and bars servicing the newly emerging tourism.Meals: B,LCycling Distance: 80 KM Day 3 : KRATIEIn the morning we bike up the river to meet the Mekong Dolphins at Sandan. For that we take a boat to the middle of the river to watch them. Lunch and back to Kratie. Visit of the town on your own.Meals: B,LApprox Cycling Distance: 60 KM Day 4 : KRATIE – KAMPONG CHAMFollow the riverbank south and then west (south side). You will pass through the quaint French colonial town of Chhlong which, at one time, was a buzzing centre for the rubber trade. Some of the riverside buildings are fine examples of decaying colonial architecture, although one has recently been rescued and restored to make a fine guest house. It is worth pedaling around the market area to see what you can find. Continue west until you stumble across a local ferry to the north bank. Take this and then cycle the sandy roads through villages and Visit temples – some of which are worth a stop to visit – on to Kampong Cham where the first, Japanese funded, Cambodian bridge across the Mekong now proudly stands.Meals: B,LApprox Cycling Distance: 110 KM
Day 5: KAMPONG CHAM – PHNOM PENH
The ride continues in the same vein, following the riverbank southwest until you are just 10km out of Phnom Penh where you will finally be forced to join the main road with its heavy but slow moving traffic. The road leads you over a bridge crossing the Tonle Sap River, right into the heart of the capital.Meals: B,LApprox Cycling Distance: 90 KM Day 6 : PHNOM PENHBegin your tour of this charming capital with a tuk-tuk to visit the city’s namesake, Wat Phnom. Founded in 1373, the pagoda was built to house Buddhist relics washed ashore by the river.Visit the Royal Palace built in 1866 by King Norodom. See the different structures of this pagoda-style compound and stroll in its beautiful garden. Visit the Silver Pagoda so named because of its floor that is comprised of 5,000 silver tiles. A gold Buddha encrusted with 9,584 diamonds and a small 17th century emerald and baccarat crystal Buddha are also housed here. Continue to the nearby National Museum. Built in 1917 it is an exceptional example of traditional architecture and is exclusively devoted to preserving and displaying Khmer art and sculptures. Hundreds of pieces are housed here including both pre-and post-Angkorian pieces. At evening enjoy cruising on the River for the sunset.Meals: BApprox Cycling Distance: — Day 7 : PHNOM PENH-SIEM REAPPhnom Penh to Siem Reap on the National Road is quite a boring and dangerous adventure.
