Embark on a captivating and deeply insightful half-day private tour that takes you beyond the ancient temples of Angkor and into the vibrant, living heart of Cambodia's aquatic world – Tonle Sap Lake, focusing specifically on the remarkable floating village of Kampong Phluk. Golden Trail Travel invites you on an exclusive and unforgettable journey to explore Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, witness the ingenious architecture of stilt and floating houses, and intimately connect with the resilient communities whose lives are intricately woven with the unique rhythms of this immense ecosystem. This meticulously crafted private tour offers a comprehensive and deeply authentic glimpse into a side of Cambodia that provides a powerful contrast to the historical ruins, highlighting the ingenuity and warmth of its people and their fascinating adaptations to an ever-changing environment.
Your immersive adventure begins with a comfortable and convenient pick-up directly from your Siem Reap accommodation by your private, professional, English-speaking guide and a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. The scenic drive will take you through picturesque rural landscapes, passing lush green rice paddies and charming traditional villages, offering serene glimpses into authentic Cambodian daily life away from the bustling city. As you approach the Tonle Sap, your guide will provide fascinating context about the lake's immense ecological significance, its dramatic annual flood cycles (which cause its size to expand up to fivefold during the wet season), and its vital role as a lifeline for millions of Cambodians, supporting a rich biodiversity and providing crucial livelihoods primarily through fishing.
Upon arrival at the departure point for Kampong Phluk, you will board a traditional private local boat. This is where your true immersion begins, free from the schedules of larger groups. Kampong Phluk is a truly unique village composed primarily of towering stilt houses that soar above the water during the high season, and genuine floating homes that rise and fall with the lake's water levels. As your boat gently glides through the intricate network of waterways, you will be mesmerized by the incredible sight of these resilient structures – homes, schools, markets, and even pagodas – all ingeniously adapted to life on the water. This architectural marvel showcases the remarkable ingenuity and adaptation of communities to their challenging yet bountiful environment.
Your private boat journey will take you deep into the heart of the village, allowing you to intimately observe the daily life of its residents. You'll witness firsthand the unique ways in which people live, work, and commute on the water, from children paddling to school in small boats, to fishermen tending their nets, and villagers engaging in various aquatic activities. Your guide will provide insightful commentary, explaining the unique challenges and resourceful adaptations of life on the lake, the local economy, the importance of fishing, and the cultural traditions of these resilient communities, allowing for a deeper understanding than a typical group tour. Depending on the water levels and season, a significant highlight of this private tour is the opportunity to explore a serene flooded mangrove forest by a smaller, more intimate rowing boat. Gliding silently through the narrow channels of this submerged forest, with trees standing quietly in the water, creates an ethereal and incredibly peaceful landscape, offering unparalleled opportunities for stunning photographs and a moment of quiet reflection amidst nature's beauty. This unique ecosystem is vital for the lake's biodiversity, serving as a critical breeding ground for fish and a sanctuary for various bird species.
Beyond the main village and forest, your private boat will venture further out onto the vast expanse of Tonle Sap Lake itself, offering breathtaking panoramic views and a profound sense of its immense scale. You'll experience the tranquil beauty of the open water and gain a true appreciation for this vital freshwater resource, a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which sustains a vibrant ecosystem and provides livelihood for a significant portion of Cambodia's population.
Throughout the tour, your knowledgeable private guide will offer insightful commentary, answer all your questions, and ensure a flexible itinerary that caters precisely to your interests and pace. Being a private tour, you have the luxury of spending more time observing particular aspects of village life, capturing stunning photographs, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere without feeling rushed. This half-day format is ideal for those who have limited time but still wish to experience the unique charm and vibrant life of the Tonle Sap in depth.

One of the most scenic villages on Tonle Sap Lake, Kompong Phluk is also one of the least visited by tourists. On this tour, learn about local life as you cruise around stilted houses and floating markets, and take a canoe ride through the beautiful flooded forests. Hear commentary from your guide along the way, choose from a morning or afternoon tour, and enjoy hassle-free hotel pickup and drop-off.
Pick up from your hotel in Siem Reap and set out a private tour to the countryside which drive about 45-minutes to the fishermen’s village of Kompong Phluk whose name means 'harbor of the tusks' and Cambodia great lake. Enjoy Tonle Sap Lake, is a lake with no ends in front of you, and birds flying slowly overhead and surrounding with the interesting village.
During the dry season (February to Jul), the village can be reached by mini bus or motorbike, as the – bumpy - road that is normally flooded dries up.
In the rainy season (August to Jan), a short boat ride from the quay, through the wetland area will take you to Kompong Phluk. It is not a floating village but a village on high stilts as well as some floating houses and in spite of fishing is often the privilege of the Vietnamese minority but inhabitants of Kompong Phluk are almost exclusively of Cambodian origin. The villagers frequently move from house to another house during the rainy season, they live in houses built on stilts and move to small huts near the waterfront during the dry season to do fishing.
Arrive at the quay, board a local boat for a 1.5-hour ride on the Tonle Sap Lake as well as village where you will see nature in a way you’ve only seen in picture books, and the tour of Kampong Phluk is worth the extra effort to get there, then we will visit the village, the pagoda on the only butte (the only building which is not on stilts) and see the activities of the villagers who your expert guide will teach you about their culture, the life style, and the ecosystem of this fascinating place.
Optional (August to Jan): you can pay an extra to take a small canoes paddle by villagers; will take you deep into the dense flooded forest. The trees of this forest are perfectly adapted to their unusual existence as they are completely submerged a part of the year.
Return to Siem Reap and drop off at your hotel or requested drop off point within Siem Reap city center.
