Golden Trail Travel invites you on a unique journey that transports you back centuries, offering an unparalleled glimpse into traditional Vietnamese rural life and the enduring charm of a village almost untouched by time. As the first ancient village in Vietnam to be recognized as a national relic, Duong Lam provides an authentic and profound escape from the urban bustle, showcasing pristine examples of ancient houses, communal temples, and the serene pace of traditional life.

Your adventure begins with a comfortable and scenic drive from your Hanoi accommodation, transitioning gracefully from the bustling city to the peaceful, verdant countryside of Son Tay Town. The journey itself offers a glimpse into rural Vietnamese landscapes, with lush rice paddies and scattered farmhouses setting a tranquil tone for your cultural exploration.

Upon arrival at Duong Lam Ancient Village, you'll immediately feel as though you've stepped into a bygone era. The village is famously characterized by its well-preserved laterite houses, built from reddish-brown blocks of compressed earth, a unique architectural style prevalent in the northern delta. Our expert local guide will lead you through its charming, narrow alleys, allowing you to immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere. You'll have the opportunity to stroll or cycle leisurely through the village, observing daily life unfold as locals go about their routines, offering a rare insight into the simplicity and harmony of traditional Vietnamese village existence.

A highlight of the tour is visiting some of the most prominent historical and cultural sites within Duong Lam. You'll explore ancient communal houses (dình), the spiritual and administrative heart of the village, adorned with intricate carvings and traditional designs. Discover ancient temples like Mia Pagoda (Sung Nghiem Tu), a significant Buddhist temple housing 287 statues, and the Mong Phu Temple, dedicated to the village's guardian deity. You'll learn about the village's unique customs, the significance of its ancestral worship, and its role as the birthplace of two Vietnamese kings, Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen, adding layers of historical depth to your visit.

A special aspect of this tour is the opportunity for cultural interaction. You might visit a local family's ancient house, where you can learn about their traditions, taste local delicacies such as "che lam" (peanut candy) or "tuong" (soybean sauce) which Duong Lam is famous for, and perhaps enjoy a cup of traditional Vietnamese tea. This direct engagement provides a heartwarming and authentic connection to the local community.

Day: Half-day Tour to Hanoi's Ancient Village of Duong Lam

The Ministry of Culture and Information in Vietnam has designated Duong Lam as the first ancient village as a national relic. Many of the houses there have a 400-year history, giving it a history of roughly 1,200 years. Duong Lam Ancient Village is a notable site for scientists studying resident communities in ancient agriculture, in addition to its historical and tourism significance. The communal house, well, banyan, and village gate are significant elements in the classification of Duong Lam ancient village.

Receive a warm welcome from your driver and personal tour guide this morning in the lobby of your hotel. After that, we'll travel 60 kilometers west of Hanoi to see Duong Lam Ancient Village. After arriving, we will stroll through the numerous narrow lanes and stop by the old homes of the inhabitants to have a cup of green tea and chat. The majority of the structures in the hamlet are constructed from laterite and mud extracted from nearby ponds, two naturally occurring resources. This makes the village unique. For example, laterite is utilized on the walls of houses, gates, wells, and temples. We will also have the opportunity to visit the lacquer painting workshop that renowned Vietnamese artist Nguyen Tan Phat opened as part of the tour. Observe how newer artists are preserving and honoring this ancient Vietnamese culture. Next, we'll go to Mong Phu Temple, which is the only hamlet with its original village entrance gate still standing.

We will stop at a local residence for lunch, where we will eat a home-cooked meal featuring regional specialties from the North. After a traditional Vietnamese lunch, we will take a brief break and ride to the 15th-century Mia Pagoda, which houses 287 statues of varying sizes, as well as the temples dedicated to Vietnam's two national heroes, Ngo Quyen and Phung Hung.

You will be securely escorted back to your Hanoi hotel in the late afternoon.
