The Ultimate Trans-Indochina Cycling Expedition – 28 Days Across North Thailand, Laos & North Vietnam

Prepare for the adventure of a lifetime with our "Cycling Tour from North Thailand Through Laos and North Vietnam - 28 Days." This unparalleled, meticulously crafted expedition is the ultimate challenge for seasoned cyclists and culture enthusiasts, offering a profound, immersive journey across three fascinating Southeast Asian nations. For four remarkable weeks, you'll traverse an incredible diversity of landscapes – from the verdant mountains of Northern Thailand, through the serene, mystical lands of Laos, to the dramatic karst formations and vibrant cultures of North Vietnam. This isn't just a bike tour; it's a deep dive into the heart of Indochina, revealing ancient histories, resilient communities, and breathtaking natural beauty experienced intimately on two wheels.

Your epic odyssey commences in Northern Thailand, a region known for its lush mountains, ancient temples, and vibrant hill tribe cultures. Starting in the historic city of Chiang Mai, you'll acclimatize with rides through scenic countryside, past rice paddies, and into charming local villages. The journey then takes you towards the infamous Golden Triangle, where you'll cycle along the mighty Mekong River, crossing into Laos. This initial phase allows for a gradual build-up of stamina while immersing you in the gentle rhythms of Thai rural life.

The heart of the tour unfolds as you enter Laos, a land of untouched beauty and profound tranquility. Cycle along the legendary Mekong, through remote villages where time seems to stand still, and into the spiritual capital of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site of serene temples and saffron-robed monks. You'll navigate challenging but rewarding mountain passes, experience exhilarating descents, and discover hidden waterfalls. The journey through Laos continues into the stunning karst landscapes of Vang Vieng, offering a mix of flat riverside riding and more adventurous routes through limestone valleys, always with the backdrop of the country's gentle, welcoming spirit.

The final, and perhaps most dramatic, leg of your journey takes you into North Vietnam. Crossing the border, you'll immediately feel the shift in energy as you cycle through the historically significant battlefields of Dien Bien Phu, a poignant reminder of Vietnam's resilient past. From there, the terrain becomes increasingly spectacular as you enter the awe-inspiring Ha Giang province, home to the legendary Ha Giang Loop. Here, you'll tackle some of Southeast Asia's most challenging and rewarding cycling, conquering the formidable Ma Pi Leng Pass with its jaw-dropping views of the Nho Que River canyon. Engage with vibrant ethnic minority communities, whose traditional lives are deeply intertwined with this rugged landscape, experiencing authentic homestays and unique cultural exchanges.

The adventure culminates with a thrilling ride through the majestic mountains of Sapa, famous for its cascading rice terraces and colorful hill tribes, followed by a well-deserved rest and exploration of the iconic Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site where you'll cruise amidst thousands of limestone islets. Throughout this incredible 28-day journey, you'll be fully supported by experienced local guides who offer invaluable insights, a dedicated support vehicle for luggage and weary legs, and carefully selected accommodations that range from comfortable hotels to authentic homestays. After eating breakfast at the hotel, we start the day with a quick transport to the neighboring reservoir, from where we take a boat to the beginning of our trek. We prepare for an amazing trail that takes us through a picturesque teak forest and through some fantastic single track. After a while, we emerge from the jungle at a waterfall, where our support truck is waiting to restock water and offer snacks. After that, we drive to our lunch destination, a charming little eatery with a reservoir view. We ride down back roads in the country after lunch, then we go off the road and head into the forest. We next make our way to our resort, which is close to Chiang Dao. It's time to relax by the pool before supper.Summary:Activity: Transferring, Boat ride and CyclingAccommodation: HotelMeals:B/L/DCycling distance: 60 Km/

Before we hit the dirt, we ride by towering limestone cliffs and rice farms. We go on unpaved paths plowed by nearby hill tribes and come across Akha, Lisu, Lau, and Palaung people. The vibrant Palaung people are new immigrants, and you may see their ladies toiling in the fields wearing bulky brass waistbands. We make a lunch stop at a Forestry Camp and then ride some amazing mountain tracks for a truly fantastic day. At the trail's end, our support vehicle will be ready to drive us to Chiang Rai.Summary:Activity: Short transferring and cycling to HotelAccommodation: HotelMeals:B/L/DCycling distance: 48 Km  Day 04: Chiang Rai – Chiang Saen

The journey is leisurely and unhurried, offering breathtaking views as you wind through the mountains of Udomxai Province, arriving at Pakbeng after approximately ten hours. This trip provides a fascinating look at the significance of the river to the Lao people's life, not just as a method of transit but also for irrigation, fishing, and the conveyance of commodities to remote locations not reachable by road.Summary:Activity:  Clear Formality Thailand - LaosAccommodation: HotelMeals:B/L/DCycling distance: On Boat
Day 07: Pakbeng - Oudomxay
We cycle through extremely rural Laos, where hill tribe villages scratch out a subsistence living from the land, after an hour-long transfer. The villages of Phu Tai, Tai Lu, Hmong, Tai Dam, Lao, and Khamu will be passed along the route. The locals are still quite amiable and have not grown weary of tourists. We visit towns along the way where families are still weaving on antique looms while seated in the shade. The 300-meter pass must be climbed in order to reach Oudomxay, the provincial capital. This requires a lengthy descent.Summary:Activity: Cycling and transferAccommodation: HotelMeals:B/L/DCycling distance: 70 Km

For portions of this amazing route, we'll return to the forest. Although initially hilly, the gradient eventually becomes more gradual, revealing breathtaking scenery before culminating in a 30 km downhill ride to Pak Mong, a small town with a supply depot. A Royal Palace Museum and historic monasteries are also present. Remember that the support truck is there to assist you, so take your time. As you pass some of Asia's highest and most stunning limestone mountains with unusual angles from mountains covered in jungle, the beauty will lessen your suffering. You will view Phu Pha, a rugged limestone summit revered by both Buddhists and animist hill tribes. It also includes the opportunity to sample Lao cuisine at a vocational restaurant.Enjoy a guided trip today to learn about the lesser-known attractions of Vientiane, sometimes known as "the city of sandal wood." Far from the commotion of other Asian capitals, Vientiane is one of the most tranquil capital cities on earth. You will be picked up this morning at 0900 by your guide. Starting point of your excursion is the tranquil Wat Sisaket, which is the only temple that survived the 1828 Siamese (Thai) invasion. Thousands of tiny Buddha statues line the temple's airy teak-covered passageways, making it one of the most exquisite temples in the capital.Proceed to the adjacent Wat Phra Keo. Wat Phra Keo is a religious museum that showcases a collection of Khmer and Lao artwork. There's the Presidential Palace close as well. This edifice, which was once the French governor's palace, offers a good look into the town's colonial past even though you are not allowed to step inside.Summary:Activity: VisitingAccommodation: HotelMeals: B/LTotal cycling distance:No
Day 17: Vientiane – Paksan
Paksan, the provincial capital of Bolikhamsai, is a little town in the center of the nation that is roughly across the river from the small Thai town of Bueng Kan. The province capital is a languid transit center, largely utilized as a stopover before traveling into Thailand or along the back route to Phonsavan. After replenishing our energy for the next exciting day, we make a quick trip from the busy metropolis to the bicycle location. After finding the perfect location for cycling, we get off our bikes and head down the Mighty River on a concrete road, passing through charming villages and a peaceful pagoda along the way. The first part of the road is gentle and surrounded by beautiful scenery; we pass dry rice fields and paddy fields (slash and burn cultivation), as well as remote villages where some of the residents are Kmu (people from the Uplands). When we are hungry, we find a place to eat beside the road. The final 30 km is mountainous; we begin our ascent to the highest point of the day at 1,200 m. Depending on the time, we can drive to the summit or take the last stretch to our destination.Spend the night at Muang Khoun's guesthouse. In Muang Khoun, the former capital of Xiengkhouang, all homes and temples were bombed and set on fire between 1963 and 1973, causing extensive destruction.Summary:Activities: Cycling from HotelAccommodation;  HotelMeals: B/L/D/Attitude: 300 m – 1200 m above sea level Cycling Distance: 110 km
Day 20: Muangkhoun – Phonsavan
Today is a short day; following breakfast, we will ride on to Phonsavan, the capital district of Xiangkhuang province. We deviate from the main road along the route to see the Plain of Jars from Sites 1 and 2. We eat lunch at a nearby restaurant before riding into town. After checking into our hotel, we are free to tour the sleepy town as we like. We suggest stopping by the UXO center to learn more about unexploded ordnance. We spend the night at the town hotel. There are about 60 sites, arranged in various groups over the plateau, with the history of the stone jars (ancient stone jars) still unknown. There are just three groups that have received surveys and registrations. Since the areas are covered in dense vegetation and tainted with numerous unexploded ordinance remnants from the Indo-China conflict, the other groupings have not yet been inspected. Over three meters is the highest jar height. The function of the jars, which are thought to be between two and three thousand years old, is the subject of various different ideas. They were built, so the local tradition goes, by King Khoun Chuang to store wine for the great celebration of his triumph in the sixth century. From 1964 until 1973, Phonsavanh served as a battlefield for the Lao communist regime and the royal government.Summary:Activities: Cycling from Hotel – hotel and visiting Accommodation;  HotelMeals: B/L/DCycling Distance: 40 km
Day 21: Phonsavan – Muangkham
Since today is short, we don't need to get up early. We head straight towards the Vietnam border, stopping along the way to take pictures of the rice fields and Hmong villages (highlanders). Riding today isn't too difficult; the road goes up and down hills, and we arrive in the afternoon at our destination, a small town called Muangkham. There is an option to cycle to a cave where the locals sought refuge during the Indochina War. The cave was hit by a rocket fired by the Royal Lao Air Force, resulting in the deaths of over 300 villagers. Spend the night in the guesthouse and have dinner at the neighborhood eatery.Summary:Activities: Cycling from Hotel - hotelAccommodation; HotelMeals: B/L/D/Cycling Distance: 51 km
Day 22: Muang Kham -  Sam Neua

We descend for a long time before reaching Sam Neua.SummaryActivitiy: Cycling and TransferringAccommodation: HotelMeals: B/L/DTotal distance: 85 km
Day 23: Sam Neua -  Vieng Xai
We cycle across a beautiful environment in the morning to Vieng Xai, which is well-known for its caverns. During Laos's covert conflict, around twenty thousand communist fighters from Pathet Lao called these enormous caves home. The US was not meant to be fighting in neutral Laos, which is why this conflict was kept secret. It was all a part of the greater geopolitical events and shifts that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. The CIA-funded Hmong Army was using these caves as a base of operations while the communist forces, replete with underground towns, a hospital, and a school, were being attacked from the air.SummaryActivitiy: CyclingAccommodation: HotelMeals: B/L/DTotal distance: 49 Km
