6-Day Northeast Vietnam Epic: Bac Son Valley, Ban Gioc Waterfall & Ba Be Lake Adventure

Sunrise Conquest. After a local breakfast with your Tày host family, we embark on the highlight of the valley: a soft hike up Na Lay Mountain. It's a challenging but rewarding climb (approximately 1,200 steps). The view changes after every step! Reaching the summit, you'll be greeted by a spectacular panoramic view of the entire Bac Son valley—a breathtaking patchwork of fields framed by dramatic karst peaks. This is your moment of personal triumph and an unforgettable photo opportunity.

Historical Drive to Cao Bằng. We then begin the scenic journey to Cao Bằng via the historic That Khe & Đông Khê towns, following the famous colonial Road No. 4. This route is steeped in history, bearing the evidence of fierce battles during the French colonial era. We will make stops at your command to capture stunning photos of the magnificent, rugged border landscapes.

Arrival and Relaxation. Arrive in Cao Bằng City, check into your hotel, and enjoy a well-deserved evening to relax and explore the town center at your leisure.

Thundering Majesty. Today is dedicated to one of Vietnam’s most spectacular sights: Thác Bản Giốc (Ban Gioc Waterfall). After a two-hour drive through a magical region of towering limestone karsts, you will arrive and be instantly amazed by this natural masterpiece. At 30m high and 208m wide, it is the largest natural waterfall in Southeast Asia. Feel the mist on your face and witness the raw power of the water thundering down the three tiers on the border with China.

The Hidden Grotto. In the afternoon, we explore Ngườm Ngao Cave. We walk a hundred steps into this 2km-long subterranean world, filled with incredible stalactites and stalagmites that resemble sea life and fantastical creatures. This hidden gem also served as a shelter for thousands during the border war, adding a layer of poignant history.

Authentic Nùng Craft Village. On the way back, we visit Phục Sen, a renowned blacksmith village of the Nùng ethnic group. You'll have the unique opportunity to witness the traditional craft and even get your name burned into a souvenir knife! We then proceed to a local homestay in Phia Thap, where you will experience the legendary hospitality and authentic lifestyle of the Nùng people.

Trekking through Tradition. After breakfast, we depart from the homestay for an immersive 2-hour trek to the nearby Nùng craft villages. You’ll discover traditional crafts like the manufacture of paper and incense sticks. The stunning landscape of rice paddies and limestone peaks, coupled with the delightful hospitality of the Nùng people, makes this one of the most wonderfully authentic parts of the entire itinerary.

Scenic Drive to Ba Bể. Meet your driver and continue the journey to Ba Bể National Park. The drive offers a magnificent panorama of villages nestled into the mountain flanks. We'll stop frequently to meet the natives and capture photos of the sweeping scenery.

Arrival at Pac Ngòi. We arrive at Pác Ngòi Village in Ba Bể in the late afternoon. This is a typical, picturesque village of the Tày people, who live in traditional stilt houses overlooking the river. Settle into your next comfortable homestay, share a delicious local dinner, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the national park.

The Ba Bể Boat Serenade. This day is dedicated to the ultimate relaxation and exploration of Hồ Ba Bể. We transfer to Buốc Lốm Pier and board a traditional boat trip along the Năng River. Glide through the stunning forest scenery, passing through Puong Cave—home to thousands of bats—and continuing towards the beautiful Đầu Đẳng Waterfall.

Lunch by the Falls. We enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant by the waterfall before heading back into the heart of the lake.

Fairy Pond and Swimming. In the afternoon, the boat stops at the enchanting Fairy Pond, nestled in the middle of the primitive forest. We gently cruise around the main lake, soaking in the peace and quiet. If the weather permits, you’ll have the chance to swim in the refreshing waters of the lake. Disembark in the late afternoon. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the spectacular sunset over the mountain ranges from your homestay porch.

Morning Cycling. After breakfast, we enjoy one final morning of fresh mountain air. Take a bicycle ride through several Tày ethnic villages, keeping your path along the river and deep into the National Park.

Hủa Mã Cave. We cycle to Hủa Mã Cave (about 5km from the village), an attractive site featuring amazing formations of sparkling stalactites and stalagmites. Explore this natural wonder before cycling back.

The Drive Home. At 11:00 AM, we meet our driver at Pác Ngòi village for the 5-hour transfer back to Hanoi.

• Optional Challenge: If you’re feeling sportive and time permits, we can extend the cycling route 4km further to the beautiful Silver Waterfall.

Arrive back in Hanoi in the late afternoon. Check in to your hotel (not included in this day's price but can be added) and enjoy some free time to reflect on your incredible mountain and wilderness getaway.
