This Irrawaddy Delta birding tour is a newly created birding tour after I had sent a foreign birder first to that region in 2016. We begin our private birding excursion by picking you up at your hotel in Yangon. Leaving your hotel in the early morning, we head north toward the park of Hlawga on the outskirts of bustling Yangon. We spend the morning in the park exploring the best birding sites in mixed lowland forest of the park, targeting the highly sought-after Davison’s Bulbul (an upcoming split from Stripe-throated Bulbul) along with other interesting lowland species. After lunch at a local restaurant we continue our journey heading southwest towards the Irrawaddy Delta which is an ornithologically less-explored Irrawaddy Delta region teeming with waterfowls, storks, cranes, and raptors. In the evening we arrive in the small town of Pantanaw, where we stay overnight. Next morning we spend the whole morning exploring the best birding sites in the region. Our main target species is the highly sought-after Jerdon’s Babbler that was long thought to have gone extinct in 1941 for over 70 years and rediscovered in 2014, as well as endangered Sarus Cran. We will also have the opportunity to encounter some water birds and lowland forest species including Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Little Grebe, Asian Openbill, Yellow Bittern, Pound-Heron, Eastern Cattle Egret, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Great Egret, Intermediate Egret, Little Egret, Little Cormorant, Oriental Dater, Black-shouldered Kite, Black-eared Kite, Pied Harrier, Eastern Marsh-Harrier, Grey-headed Swamphen, Common Moorhen, Pacific Golden Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Oriental Pratincole, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Bronze-winged Jacana, Common Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, White-winged Tern, Whiskered Tern, Red Collared-Dove, Spotted Dove, Yellow-footed Green- Pigeon, Plaintive Cuckoo, Lesser Coucal, Asian Palm-Swift, Indian Roller, White-throated Kingfisher, Common Kingfisher, Little Green Bee-eater, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Coppersmith Barbet, Brown Shrike, Long-tailed Shrike, Olive-backed Sunbird, Baya Weaver, Asian Golden Weaver, White-rumped Munia, Jungle Myna, Common Myna, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Eastern Stonechat, Pied Bushchat, Oriental Magpie-Robin, Streak-eared Bulbul, Red-whiskered Bulbul, Common Sand-Martin, Barn Swallow, Red-rumped Swallow, Dusky Warbler, Black-Browed Reed-Warbler, Oriental Reed-Warbler, Zitting Cisticola, Common Tailordbird, Plain Prinia and Yellow-breasted Bunting, etc. In the afternoon we return to Yangon and conclude our birding excursion tour by dropping you off back at your hotel in Yangon. You will be among a few foreign birders to early explore the undeveloped Irrawaddy delta region, but it will be a rewarding birding trip for you.
