Cao Loc is best known for the Mau Son mountain complex. There are more than 80 large and small mountains, of which the highest is Nui Cha Mountain which is 1,541 meters high and Me Mountain 1,520m. Mau Son has a temperate climate and the average temperature is 15 degrees Celsius so it is really cool in summer and very cold in winter. The area is endowed with a biodiversity system with more than 1,500 hectares of primeval forest which is home to many rare flora and fauna species. There are many streams from the peak to the foot of the mountain, creating magnificent and splendid waterfalls.
The ethnic groups which inhabit the area are the Viet (Kinh), Tay, Nung, Dao, Mong and San Chay, Ngai who retained their tribal life styles. Nungs comprised 42.97% of the population, followed by Tay people with 35.92%. Ethnic Vietnamese are 16.5%, and the remainder are mostly Dao, Hoa, Sán Chay and Hmong.
Getting there
The best way to get to Cao Loc from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up at your place in Hanoi and brought to Cao Loc. Those who are on budget can take a public bus. Hanoi Lang Son city bus journey takes about 4-5 hours on 1A Express Highway. Then either take another local bus or motor-taxi to get to Cao Loc from Lang Son city. There are also local buses from neighboring provinces to Lang Son (Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang…)
